United Way directs voluntarily contributed funds to support human service programs of accredited local non-profit agencies.

United Way does not directly provide the services. The role of United Way is to raise and allocate funds to finance human care services provided by its member agencies in accordance with the priority of current community needs. One out of four of us in the greater St. Charles area is a recipient of services provided by a United Way funded agency.

United Way of Demo County raises and distributes funds to local member agencies that serve the needs of Demo County area residents and employees of local businesses that support United Way. Some of these agencies may be located in various communities. Other communities have their own home-based United Ways to serve the needs of their residents.

United Way of Demo County does honor donor designations to its member agencies.

Nearly 90 percent of funds raised goes back into the community to help where help is needed most. Because of outstanding community support and volunteer board of directors, fundraising, management and general expenses (including rent, insurance, salary for one full-time and one part-time employee, taxes and benefits, office supplies, postage, etc.) are about 13 percent of the total operating budget. Compared with the national average of nearly 25 percent, you will see that United Way is cost-efficient.

The local United Way will connect the individual to the appropriate member agency or to other community resources for their specific need.

United Way maintains an open door policy with respect to an agency applying for admission. Not every agency may be admitted because they may not meet the qualifications, another agency is providing the same service, or because the volunteer board of directors did not feel that the agency was prepared to be admitted.

No. All United Way meetings are self-supporting by the attendees or paid for by community-minded businesses.

United Way services are directed toward all sectors of our community for the benefit of everyone. Examples of broad-based services include: family counseling; health diagnostic programs; youth (prevention) programs; senior citizen services; and hospice care. None of us knows when a tragedy will strike and when we will need help. Everyone benefits from living and working in a healthier, happier community.
