United Way Looking for Volunteers for Tax Program

It's not yet tax time, but it is time for the United Way to look for people to train for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

VITA, as it is more commonly called, is an all-volunteer program that trains individuals to be tax preparers.  In turn, the volunteers provide free tax preparation services to low-to=moderate income persons.  The program is administered and partially funded by the United Way of Mid & South Jefferson County.

Last year VITA volunteers helped prepare 539 tax returns and put $361,000 back into taxpayers' pockets.  VITA serves a three-fold purpose.  To offer free income tax preparation; to educate about applicable tax credits; and to offer financial education.

Anyone can volunteer to become a VITA tax preparation specialist.  If interested contact Karen Do at 409-729-4040 or click HERE for more information.
